Married Catholic Priests: Eradicating Mandatory Celibacy

In the rise of the sex abuse scandal of the Catholic Church, there has been much debate regarding the causes of the abuse and solutions to preventing further abuse of innocent children. Among the foremost speculated causes is the mandatory celibacy of Catholic priests. The mandatory vow of celibacy to enter the priesthood of the Catholic Church must be eradicated and Catholic priests should be allowed to enter the institution of marriage without the threat of being kicked out of the priesthood. The vow in celibacy of the Catholic priesthood came into effect in the year 1139. Prior to that year, Catholic clergymen were allowed to be married. The reason that the Catholic Church decided to institute the mandatory vow of celibacy was to prevent priests from willing their property to their wives and children, rather than to the Church, after they died. So, in effect, "Celibacy...is all about real estate" declared Ms. Louise Haggert, founder of CITI (Celibacy Is The Issue) and devout Catholic (English, 2002). Humans, as any other mammal, are like animals when it comes to normal sexual urges. These urges are intended to be fulfilled as the natural order of things; sex is a natural human act that was created as a means to pro

Obviously, the Vatican is not taking the mental and physical health of their servants into account. Why should the most humble servants of God and the Church be punished for sacrificing their lives to do the will of God? Was not the will of God to "be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth?" (Genesis 1:28). , inappropriate sexual behavior with innocent children. If the vow of celibacy was removed, then the number of new priests would increase phenomenally. To suppress such natural feelings can be unhealthy and lead to bad behavior, i. The reason that these priests still practice those faculties is found in canon law No. Many priests who left the priesthood in order to marry left with only a few personal possessions, no salary and no pension plan. However, not many of them are capable of enduring the difficult task of enduring celibacy. The men who become ordained take celibacy vows as a religious obligation but they may not have the spiritual capacity to suppress their biological instincts" (Dziwa, 2002). While there are people who choose to be celibate, forcing celibacy on a person as a requirement to performing a lifelong profession goes against nature. In response to priests who were called to marriage, the Catholic Church has been known to be quite vindictive. However, these priests who decided to enter marriage were "punished" by the Catholic Church. Many Catholic priests who are married still practice their priestly duties despite the fact that the marriages, baptisms, etc are not valid in the Catholic Church. However, mandatory celibacy is much more than a sacrifice - it is a punishment created solely for the purpose of making the Catholic Church wealthier. "When you deny a person's right to something that is natural and good, it metamorphoses and rears its ugly head.
