Man's Inhumanity to Man
"...then my knees bent and I jounced the limb." In John Knowles's novel, A Separate Peace, Gene's jealousy of Phineas builds up to such an extreme level, that he releases all of it in that instance, and knocks him out of the tree. People's emotions can cause them to do very inhumane acts. An example of this was when Gene knocks Finny out of the tree. Another example is how the war changes Leper. All of the inhumane acts occurring in Europe that Leper sees make him go crazy. A Separate Peace builds on these actions very clearly. Throughout A Separate Peace, Gene is obviously jealous of Finny. Leper loses his mind because of inhumane acts. Sometimes, people commit very inhumane acts to one another. We don't always mean to do what we do, but, the fact is, we do them, and in one way or another, we must pay for it. The war has changed him from a harmless young man to a deranged person. He screams at Gene continuously, blaming him for breaking his leg. However, when Leper is supposedly in Europe, Gene receives a letter from Leper asking him to come to his house. Gene, who is watching this, is annoyed. He believes that for once he is seeing the true, honest Gene. Lying there, strapped to his hospital bed, is not at all happy to see Gene. Gene pays for it in the worst way, through the death of his best friend, Phineas. s the school tie as a belt, and the school's headmaster sees it. However, when Gene admits that he did, indeed, do it, Finny begins to cry. His jealousy builds up; he ends up knocking Finny out of the tree.
