I am comparing two different versions of Charles Dickens, "A Christmas Carol", the 1951 version staring Alistair Sim and the 2000 version staring Ross Kemp. Nowadays the Alistair Sim version will appeal to the older audience. The Ross Kemp version will appeal to a wider and more modern audience. The Alistair Sim version is set in London. The main setting is in Scrooge's house and in Scrooge's bedroom. This is the main setting because it is where the three spirits came and visited Scrooge and where Scrooge was after each spirit had gone. It is set on Christmas Eve and in Scrooge's opinion the day seemed to last forever. The other settings are in the workplace of Scrooge where Bob Cratchit was asking Scrooge for some time off work at Christmas, Bob Cratchit's house where his family was preparing Christmas dinner. Other settings include a pub and the street. The settings follow the novel almost perfectly. The Ross Kemp version is also set in London but on an estate that is considered "dangerous". The main setting as in the Alistair Sim version is in Scrooge's house or flat as is the case in the 2000 version. As in the 1951 version all three spirits visit Scrooge in his house.
It makes it feel like it is the 1800s in every way. The theme for the 2000 version is the same as the 1951 version but instead of Scrooge dying with chains, the spirits gave him a second chance of life with a family and people who will love and cherish him. Modern appliances and day to day goods have also been added such as cars, televisions, C. I think that both themes are perfect for the time that they were brought onto our screens. This is one of the ways of getting the message of Christmas across. Jacob Marley is a coloured man where in the 1951 version he wasn't, this is so that the film is appealing to all races and not being prejudiced towards anybody. Both purposes fit the versions perfectly as Christianity played a big part of people's lives when the book was first published. Other new characters include Scrooge's future wife, Bella, her friend, the old couple, a man wanting to go to Australia, Mrs Marley, a woman who owes Scrooge money, Scrooge's dad and his future son. Both themes put a message across also by telling people to change before it is too late to turn the clocks back. , fridge and many other electrical appliances. He and Eddie are also a lot younger in the modern version. The message of the 2000 version is to show how selfish people are being at Christmas and how we shouldn't be selfish as Christmas is a time for people to give and to share. The third spirit is his future son that he thinks is just a kid from his estate and he follows Scrooge into his car and then waits outside for him when Scrooge realises. He really suited and looked the part that I imagined Scrooge to be.
