Micheal Jackson: King of Pop

             In the mid-'eighties Michael Jackson became the biggest thing since the Beatles and the greatest single phenomenon since Elvis, and not much has changed since then. To say that Michael Jackson is a pop icon is an understatement. Love him or hate him, he's a superstar and one of the World's biggest.
             Not only is he the staple of tabloid news or the guy that's had at least one show-stopping appearance at almost every major music award ceremony since his album Thriller came out in 1982. His stardom is world wide, here is a man whose image you might come across where they don't even have Coca-Cola or TV, let alone electricity or. Really, the chances of a Jackson bumper sticker on the most smashed-up public bus creaking around the remotest parts of africa, or a cassette of Bad being a young childs most prized possestion are not that far fetched.
             The story of his fame begins with a young Michael Jackson who had eight older siblings. His older brother Tito, had gotten the ball rolling when he discovered his dad's guitar in a closet. Tito learnt how to play the guitar well enough to accompany the other Jackson boys but one day a string broke, it gave the game away to their father. After being severely punished for his secret jam sessions, Tito was then asked to show him what he could do with the guitar. Amazingly enough, he was impressed. This began a new regime of though rehersals with the boys after school.
             Michael, Marlon, Tito, Jermaine and Jackie began performing professionally as The Jackson 5 in 1966. Dispite having a hard time getting started the Jackson 5 became a hot item, not only around their hometown but also winning first place at the legendary New York Apollo Theatre talent show.
