In October 1966, following the execution of Malcolm X and the ghetto uprising in Watts, California, two young black men, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, both from Oakland, California founded the Black Panther Party for Self Defence. The leadership of the party outlined a Ten Point Program, articulating the fundamental wants and beliefs of the BPP. This manifesto demanded better social and political conditions, the right to self-determination, an end to police brutality and above all, freedom for the black masses. These demands were basically identical to those proposed by earlier Civil Rights groups (NAACP, SNCC, UNIA, etc.). Where the Panthers differed however was their proposed implementation of the Ten Point Program. Unlike the previous groups, the Panthers were prepared to use violence as a method to gain power. Throughout this essay, I will attempt to justify the Panthers use of violence, explain why such tactics were required, and examine their effectiveness in implementing changes to the ¡§great American order¡¨ and I will analyse their importance on the African-American population from 1966 to the present.

The police were, from the beginning, the primary target of Black Panther violence. The Panther can also be credited with the improvement of the policing situation in the US since the Sixties. ¡§When the peaceful means of politics are exhausted and the people do not get what they want, politics are continued. freedom and power, respect, and a decent length of life (At the time the book was published in 1976, US blacks lived on average for about 6 years less than whites) . Organisations such as the African Peoples Party and J. Reports of shootouts between Panthers and the police are often quite varied. The image of Huey Newton, Bobby Seale and Eldridge Cleaver decked out in black uniforms marching out a California courthouse carrying firearms, on national television, stirred something inside the hearts of many young black men all over the US. These things themselves are by nature inhuman or savage¡¨ He earlier claims that each member of a democracy has a Political Obligation i. However, as Sundiata Acoli, Panther 21 member claimed, ¡§Too many Panthers fell into the habit of making boisterous claims in the Public media¡¨ .
