people can choose which category they want to fit into, (if one can so called "choose"); and as we've already discussed, conformity is better than its counterpart. It offers critical evaluations of an extended amount of material.
Tanner illustrates many different theories in his book. Some approaches feel that female delinquency is the same as for males but that it "varies more in quantity than quality". Others are critical because of documentaries like "Scared Straight" that give out false hope for a simple and quick solution, and political arenas are critical since they are forced to deal with moral panics. It's easy to get raveled up in all of the arguments to the extent that at times you yourself feel lost and alienated. Four boys are arrested for every girl; and girls are more likely to be arrested for less violent crimes, such as prostitution and theft, whereas boys are more likely to be arrested for violent crimes. However, half of the leisure activities pursued by adolescents that society deems deviant are no different from that of the behavior of adults. By defining what deviance is we allow ourselves to set standards of what we can and can't tolerate. Without the bad people, how do we know who the good are? Thus having, and then defining deviance, allows us to define what is not norm violating behavior. As long as deviants have no reason to feel threatened in an area where nobody "cares" or nobody "sees", these deserted streets leave a lot of room for crime activity to take place.
