Captain John Smith, the original colonizer of Jamestown, is the author of this story of struggle and survival. His purpose in writing this article was to show that his efforts in improving the colony would have produced a positive outcome. In Smith's point of view, he believed that if they would have listened to what
. . .
The problem in this particular story was the difficulties of beginning a new settlement in a new country. he had to say, they would not be experiencing the difficulties in which they were undergoing. If they had considered the advice given by Smith, by collecting food before the severe weather had arrived, they could have evaded this disastrous situation from the beginning. This proved to be a strenuous task because for years, John Smith tried to unite the colonists, but they all neglected his efforts in improving the colony. It was overwhelmed with disease, famine, and starvation leaving the entire colony crippled. So, after years of frustration, Smith abandoned them. He held the knowledge that was capable of keeping the colony functioning and growing. One of these dilemmas included nature itself. This was just one of the many ordeals John Smith was trying to prevent. "
In my opinion of the story, I would have to agree with the actions John Smith took. They even had the chance to start a new and better life than before, but they did nothing. In my aspect, it was the fault of the colonists that the colony did not succeed. In a sense, he is saying "I told you so. Hardships he attempted to alleviate when he was present in the colony.
