Stereotyped Goths
When I think of stereotyped social groups, the first group I think of are Goths. The media projects them as a negative social group, Satanists, and a possible reason of the Columbine school shooting. I had the chance to go see what the gothic community is like when I stayed with my cousin in Dallas a year ago. It was mid-August last year when my cousin Brandon called me and asked me to come stay with him a few days while he was in Dallas. I agreed and asked him what we would do. He told me we would be spontaneous and go with the flow. I met up with Brandon and two of his friends in Dallas a week after I had talked to him on the pho . . .
I asked Seth and James about their look, and why they dress like they do. They explained to me about gothic culture, and why they decided to be gothic. A lot of people turn to the gothic subculture after a hard time in life, and look for a way to express themselves in such a way to mirror their feelings. The media, in my opinion, needs to look toward the true aspects and stop stereotyping the gothic culture. Both of Brandon’s friends were dressed in black clothes from the neck down, had unusual hairstyles, and wore light colored makeup on their faces. Brandon, James, Seth and I went downtown to a certain club in Deep Ellum. I enjoyed the time I spent with the Goths and am happy to have learned about a subculture I did not understand. A majority of the people explained how they were stereotyped, how they felt about it, and what the gothic subculture means to them. The truth is not all Goths are how they are perceived. I had a chance to talk to many of the people in the club. The differences in society’s view and the truth about Goths is society looks at the “strange behavior” such as dyeing their hair, the makeup they use, and the clothes they wear whereas the Goths are just making a stand to be different and get respect in the process. The truth about the gothic culture is not all Goths wear black, some wear white and some wear gunmetal, however; black is the most common color to wear. The media as well as other social groups and subcultures think of the Goths as depressed, violent, suicidal, drug users and Satanists.
