Albert Einstein

             Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany, in 1879, and spent his youth in Munich, where his family owned a small shop that manufactured electric machinery. He finished high school in Switzerland, then entered the Swiss National Polytechnic in Zurich. He often cut classes and used the time to study physics or to play the violin. He graduated in 1900 and got a job in the Swiss patent office in 1902. In 1903 he married Mileva Maric, who had been a classmate of his at Polytechnic. They had two sons. Later they divorced and Einstein remarried.
             In 1905 Einstein received his doctorate from the University of Zurich, for a research paper on molecules. For the rest of his life, he worked on his theories. He received awards and honors, including the Nobel Prize in physics. His most famous discoveries were the theories of relativity. His life was hectic and in 1928, he collapsed due to overwork. However he made a full recovery.
             In 1935, Adolph Hitler became chancellor of Germany; Einstein left Germany and went to the United States. He took a position at the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton, N. J. In 1939, he and several physicists wrote a letter to President Roosevelt, pointing out the possibilities of making an atomic bomb and the possibilities that the Germans were making one. He was active in the cause of international arms control and world government.
             In 1940, he became a United States citizen and made many contributions to peace during his life. By 1949 he became ill and spent time in a hospital. He was in ill health the next few years. One week before his death, Einstein signed his last letter. It was a letter to Bertrand Russell, world renowned peace advocate, in which he agreed that his name should go on a declaration urging all nations to give up nuclear weapons. One o
