Dark Poe
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001 2:29:46 PM Eastern Standard TimeDark Romantics was a term coined in reference to the writers whose literarycontent emphasized in the ideas of sin, guilt, and predestination. Threewriters encompassed this category, Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, andHerman Melville. Even though all three of these writers were considered DarkRomantics, they all went about expressing themselves in different ways. In Poes Fall of the House of Usher, Poe uses a multitude of adjectives, adverbs, and sensory details to describe the characters and theirsurroundings. In doing so, Poe creates an atmosphere for the reader andtransports then into the characters mind. For example when the narrator issitting in his room, he begins to describe his surroundings the bewilderinginfluence of the gloomy furniture of the room-of the dark and tatteredtapestries, which, tortured into motion by the rising breath of the tempestThe tempest that the narrator is referring to is the tor
He, like Melville hasmany religious overtones, but doesnt use as many references to biblicalicons. After reading the works of the Dark Romantics, you realize how differentthey are; but in another light; how similar. There were a few brighter spots in his life though. This millenarian concept shows up in Moby Dick. If the reader didnt know what Grog was thenhe or she might not get the full understanding of what they were doing. Asyou can see his works definitely reflect this feeling of loneliness, depression, and solitude. Long-long-;long-many minutes, many hours, many days, have I heard it! Although Poes use of this literarydevice among others makes for a creepy atmosphere-filled read, it also makeshim less accessible to the average reader. Another signof the readers going deeper and deeper into the subconsciouses and minds ofthe characte!rs is Poes use of stream of consciousness. In contrast toPoe and Melville there is Nathaniel Hawthorne. Nothear it? Yes, I hear it, and have heard it. Some may say that they were a little crazy orweird; but they were real; they had a deeper understanding of life and theway people really acted and felt. On the opposite end of thespectrum, Hawthorne was highly regarded by critics and wrote to send amessage. In one scene, all of the sailors assemble on the ships deckan!d fill their harpoons with Grog. In Poes case he grew up an orphan; yearningfor the want of parental affection. That is what the tornado in the Fall of the House ofUsher, serves as, a symbol of delving into the characters minds.
