Gigamesh and the Bible

As I look at my life much change has been bestowed upon me. Moving from city to city, school to school, I always had a parent, a friend, a companion. Companionship is an important factor in the mental well being of a person. This has been proven throughout time. Whether it is a mate, a wife, or a friend, it seems as though we all have someone. Even in the beginning of time when man was first created, a second, a woman was later produced as a partner. Two comparative pieces of literature have been passed down to tell the story of birth and creation. These two stories not only portray the beginning of life as we know it, but the beginning of something else, the beginning of companionship.

The two tales told are those from Gilgamesh and the first story of the Bible, Genesis. As they are read the reader is given a new understanding of life and love. The stories provide literature that shows the meaning of companionship and also how it prevails. In both stories a higher being created the companions for a man named Adam, from the Bible, and for Gilgamesh. The companionships although much alike had many different characteristics.

. . .

With that the God’s heard their wish and created Gilgamesh’s double, to allow one stormy heart to contend with another (5). Adam and Eve became husband and wife, and bore many children, who are believed to be our forefathers, and Gilgamesh and Enkidu became nothing more nor less of friends and brothers. Eve was created from Adam to be his wife. Her sole purpose was to prevent loneliness from Adam and to reproduce. The same for Gilgamesh, he was nothing but a powerful egotistical man who thought he ruled the world; no one was better than he, until he met Enkidu. Scared of their protector, the old men cried out to the God’s and begged for them to create another. Without Eve the world as we know it is believed to not even exist. One of these similarities is the God’s that watch over them. Maybe a companion is a person to depend on a leader, that sometimes follows. Without Eve, Adam may have lived a life so lonely, it is hard to comprehend. Eve from Genesis, on the other hand was created merely as a partner.

Ever since the beginning of time companionship has been detrimental to the human society. Granted Gilgamesh was with a town full of people, but no one like himself, two-thirds god, and one-third human.

Another difference in the companionships of the two includes the presentation of each. He was also part man and part god, which gave him much power over his city, Uruk.
