1984 and Brave New Worldld

Brave New World and 1984 are both literary works that describe governing bodies who exercise complete control over their societies, the differences lie in the ways they control the people and the reason’s they do so.

The people of Brave New World are controlled from the begining. “Huxely’s world is run by a few World Controllers who create...the world’s population” (Waitt 1). These controllers have “taken the pain of life’s ambiguities and indecisions upon [their] own shoulders in order to spare those less capable from having to endure such emotional and physcological presure.” The people are made in the Hatcheries and Conditioning Centres, it is here that they are prepared to spend the rest of their lives as “square pegs in square holes” and “round pegs in round holes” (Waitt 1). This control is achieved in two ways: (1) oxygen deprevation; the less oxygen, the less intelligence and the less physically developed the person is, and (2) hypnopaedia, or sleep conditioning; phrases drilled over and over into the minds of the children as they sleep. (Waitt 1) “The net result of this conditioning is a society that is totally and deliberately infantile. All activities are transitory, trivial, and mindless--promiscuity replaces

. . .

” (Earhart 1) The Controllers have created a society with large groups of identical people. passion, immediate sensory stimulation (feelies) replaces art, hallucinatory escape (soma) replaces personal growth. more difficult to think of and communicate. “Thought control is executed through the falsification of history. The Controllers hold their power because of this lack of emotion and they claim that the reason they condition everyone is to relieve the stress of life from their shoulders. And the contrast of reasoning behind why a group should stay in power is there and seems to be different yet taking the stress and decisions and brudens off the people takes away the very essence of what makes them human, as does limiting a person’s creativity and thought. In doing this they have gained complete controll because “when all humans are alike and conditioned to be content with their social class, it leaves no room or conflict, and therefore stability results. This happens often in the society because people suspect other people of being unloyal to The Party and their friends turn them in to the Thought Police. The Controllers have “assumed the role of God” that have created humans “with no feeling, free will or uniqueness”, they will live in a world that is “free of war disease and chaos” but it is also “free of meaning, love, and humaness.
