Capital Punishment, also referred to as the Death Penalty, is defined as the execution of criminals by the state for committing crimes regarded as so heinous that it is the only acceptable punishment. The controversy of whether or not Capital Punishment is morally right or wrong is a debate that is on top of the list for many politicians and Americans. A topic of debate in relation to Capital Punishment is whether or not the public televising of executions is a just means of deterring future criminals. This means that executions, such as: electrocution, the gas chamber, firing squad, lethal injections and even hangings will be available to the public on cable for all individuals to watch. If only criminals were allowed to view such events, the effect may have some positive aspects. Many feel that televising such horrific events will allow supervised and unsupervised children to view the executions via television. Due to American families being single parent or dual working parents, this could be the case. Children are left alone more often than not and are able to view anything they want. Teaching our children morals and giving them solid values is a positive means to deterring crimes. We do not need to add to the dail
Many are caught and tried and convicted. Does this mean that these people don't understand what is going on? In 1986 James Terry Roach was executed in South Carolina for raping and murdering two young women and killing a young man (Guernsey, 1993). This could mean that there will be an increase of juveniles waiting to be executed. But Americans have argued that the only reason we still have the death penalty is to satisfy people's revenge. No one has argued that society has the right to protect its citizens. If you agree with the concept of Capital Punishment, you must also accept the reality of death. Scott Robert Hays (1990) stated the following:"No evidence has yet been proven or disproved the theory that the threat of death discourages criminals from a life of crime. Many Americans feel that, by publicizing the death penalty, it would deter crime. Supporters of the death penalty believe that, in certain circumstances, people who take human life deserve to lose their own lives. Teach them respect for one another as well as for their own life. Duffy, who spent his entire life in prison work, is a firm opponent of Capital Punishment. Broadcasting executions will not ensure that criminals and future criminals will see the event or if they do, be affected by such an event. When a juvenile murders another person, however, the court can use the full range of its sentencing powers, including a long term in prison or the death penalty.
