Should the right of public sch

There has been much controversy about whether or not public school teachers should have the right to strike. Some people believe that the right to strike should be unrestricted, while others feel that this right must be limited. In this essay I will argue that the right of public school teachers to strike should be curtailed. My main argument will be that when public school teachers strike, the education of children is interrupted. If the education of children is interrupted, then they won't have the same opportunities as their peers. If children don't have the same opportunities as their peers, then parents will question the spending of their tax money and might look for better schools. When teachers strike the ability of schools to achieve their objectives in a high-quality way is compromised. Therefore, if public school teachers strike, then students won't have the opportunity to perform well. A strike is a means through which employees demand changes because they are dissatisfied with aspects of their jobs. Teachers want higher salaries, better working conditions, and job security. Their demands serve their own interests and essentially, not the interests of their students. Teachers are supposed to be advocates fo

Some might object that by meeting the demands of striking teachers, the schools may be more efficient with increased resources and better-qualified teachers in the classroom. When teachers strike, there is a decrease in student achievement. The educational system simply cannot withstand the stress put upon it by teachers striking. The power of parental choice is nothing new in the history of American education. "Some people will argue that strikes were not just manifestations of self-interest; they showed that teachers cared enough about their students to insist on having sufficient resources" (Cutler, 2000, p. Parents dissatisfaction with how their money is being spent, may translate into their looking to alternatives for the education of their children. I would respond to these objections by saying that the majority of the population wants their money used effectively and not exhausted. However, "Studies have shown that children who have been diagnosed with a range of mental disabilities are best supervised with a teacher providing continuous education" (San Nicolas & Tanji). Schools have many objectives such as rigorous high school graduation requirements and attaining a minimal grade on a test for promotion. Students that have continuity in their education will have the same opportunity as the rest of the competing population. After all, better salaries and working conditions might translate into better schools" (p. Considering that teachers' salaries are the greatest cost in a school budget, teachers are a vital part of this investment that parents and students cannot afford to lose. Also, when public school teachers interrupt the educational process, the goals of the institution will be compromised. Once teachers go on strike they are no longer advocates for children.
