wimbledon

As history has it, Wimbledon started as far back as the nineteenth century and is still a highlight of the world and the pride of England. In 1877, the first Lawn Tennis Championship was held at The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club. This was still the time when women were not quite as equal as the every day genteleman, so only the men participated in the event. Only ten years later did the women get an equal opportunity. As an outcome thirteen women players actually entered the event. About twenty years following this, the first American woman entered the event and won (Wimbledon 2000). The Wimbledon is probably the most unique tennis tournament. The first reason is that it is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. The second reason is that its courts are made out of grass. The last reason is that even today it is considered the greatest and most prestigeous tournament in the world. It came down to the point where people had to stand to watch the game. So the actual stadium was remodeled and expanded to fit 14,000 people. Even the second World War was not enough to close the club. It even came down to the fact where a bomb struck center court destroying 1,200 seats (wimbledon site).

The technology has advanced to such a great degree that players are able to compete in any whether conditions. Unlike the men, the women only need two sets to win. Tennis started with wooden racquets but now things such astitanium make up their structure. Today it is very hard to find a club membership, but even if found the prices tend to be outrageous. Croquet was promoted and publicized by a gentleman with the name James Whitmore. The only downfall to the grass courts is that they dry at a very slow rate after precipitation causing numerous accidents every season. When the sport was introduced to England it flourished (Levingston 1996). The sport was becoming tremendously popular and even books or written on the strategies of the game. A historian greatly captures this idea by stating, "although croquet was a highly sociable and fashionable pastime, women's weaker sex is only capable of doing the gentle games" (Levingston 1996). A player is able to make a point by sricking an opponents ball with his own. To a great surprise the largest of all croquet clubs is located in Philadelphia (Levingston 1996). Today the Wimbledon's official site houses the memories of the past. At Wimbledon it is possible to buy items from the history of the tournaments. Even tennis balls used for last year's final can easily be purchased With today's technology it is possible to easily fly to Wimbledon from anywhere in the world just to enjoy a game of tennis.
