A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal

             The poem that I have chosen to study is called "A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal", and it was written by William Wordsworth, in seventeen-ninety-nine.
             She seemed a thing that could not feel
             Rolled round in earth's diurnal course,
             This poem is essentially an expression of the way that the poet suddenly realizes the humanity and reality of a close friend of his, a realization that is brought about by her death.
             This poem is only eight lines, and a result of this is an incredible density of information. Every nuance of the poem is near vital for the expression of the concerns of poet, in a number of different ways.
             The way that the poet thought about his friend is established in the first quatrain. He expresses the unearthly qualities that he imagined in her, and the way he thought that she was separate from the natural course of nature. His complacency is well expressed in the first line, which is also the name of the poem. "A slumber did my spirit seal" In this line, the poet communicates the way that he was unconscious of the human nature of his friend, and he draws special attention to this idea through alliteration of the s sound. Each line of the rest of the first quatrain reinforces her apparent unearthly nature. The connotation of words and phrases such as "no human fears" and "could not feel the touch of earthly years" communicates the apparent immortal nature of his friend. The other significant word in this first quatrain is the use of "seemed". "She seemed a thing..." This creates a foreshadowing of the second quatrain, in which he realizes her human nature.
