As a Teenager

When I was first given this assignment; a paper on the "teenager;" I was sure it would be a simple task you see, I am the very proud mother of two teenagers. I have a fifteen-yearold girl and a thirteen-year-old boy. Then it occurred to me, where to begin? Teenage behavior is nearly impossible to understand, let alone define in three double spaced pages. Taber's defines adolescence as "the period from the beginning of puberty until maturity." Because the gradual process of puberty varies among individuals, it is not practical to set exact age or chronological limits in defining the adolescent period. Now we can all understand why some thirty-year-old adults still exhibit adolescent behavior. Erickson described the primary psychosocial task for adolescence as the search for identity. "Who am I?" Identity begins as the teen starts to spend more time away from the family. They start to explore more of the world around them and begin to develop a sense of self. Teenagers are in

At the same time we must allow them to make their own mistakes and learn from them in a constructive way. The answer to this problem has eluded many parents over the years. In my experience, a good cure for this is called chores. As teens struggle to find themselves, they test all the limits. Of course, this is right back to where we started. To the extreme that many parents, fear ear deformities and telephone elbow. So do their parents!! Anger often occurs when the teen is told they cannot do a desired task. Having two teenagers in the same home means they will be opposite of one another, at all times. as they grow and learn, so do I. Birth control and sex education facts are imperative for today's teen. A parent should try to alleviate these fears with reassurance that they teen is as good as everyone's life. Of course, the chances of them keeping a neat house before they are thirty, are slim indeed. The mad one will not rest until they make the happy one mad.
