Op-Ed Argument - In this 5-7 page essay (the shining gem of your written work this semester), you will construct an argument styled after those presented in the op-ed pages of The New York Times (see http://www.nytimes.com/pages/opinion/index.html). You will identify one specific and timely issue from among the following broad themes: 2. You will present background information on the issue, summarize the range of positions, and then articulate your own informed opinion about what should be done (or not done, as the case may be), using evidence from
Here I have in mind the university newspaper The Signal, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, any of your hometown newspapers, or (why not?) a national newspaper. Late papers will not be accepted, nor will papers submitted by any means other than the Assignment Dropbox ("Assessment Tools" + "Assignments" + "Assignment 3" + Submit Paper). [You will find out which paper you are assigned to review in the first message posted in the bulletin board. After November 19, the Professor and Teaching Assistants will also provide feedback on the papers. Each person in the group will then be responsible for reviewing and commenting upon the draft paper of one other group member. [These are new groups and have nothing to do with your earlier group membership for Assignments 1 and 2. A draft of your paper must be posted in your group's bulletin board forum by noon on Monday, November 12. All reviews must be posted in the group bulletin board forum by no later than noon on Monday, November 19. If you are not aware, the AJC reserves a special column on its op-ed pages for contributions from university and high school students. To earn extra credit, the piece must be published by no later than December 12 (the date of the exam for this course). ] Each group will have its own bulletin board forum on WebCT. ] These reviews are designed to provide constructive advice on how to make the paper stronger. Extra credit (a two-letter grade increase in the score for your lowest paper grade) will be awarded to any paper that gets published-not as a letter to the editor, but as a real editorial. For this first draft, simply paste your document into a bulletin board message (do not attach a file). The class will be divided into groups of four students each.
