Metal vs. Rap (contrast essay)

Can you honestly recall watching a television commercial without a catchy jingle or song playing in the background? If you have, these commercials are probably few and far between one another. Music is everywhere nowadays, and is divided into a multitude of musical genres. Heavy metal and rap, more specifically, are two very distinct classifications of music. Heavy metal and rap differ from each other by the music, the bands and the fans. The musical, or instrumental, aspect of heavy metal and rap are contrasting in many points of views. It should initially be noted that heavy metal is actually a "subcategory" of metal music itself. Other subcategories include: death metal, black metal, speed metal, and many more . . . Yet, metal is called heavy metal, simply because it is a better-known term. Rap, on the other hand, doesn't precisely have any subcategories, but withholds similarities with many other musical genres, such as: Hip-hop, reggae, blues, urban, etc . . . The beat and lyrics for both metal and rap, however, makes for an excellent example of how they oppose each other. On one hand, a metal song will display, either on the guitar or on the drums, a medium to fast beat. This rhythm could be a mix of fast guitar and sl

When rap first got out, many rapers wore flashy clothing and many other "funky" items (some even wore clocks around their necks!). Today, the style is somewhat similar, except for several modifications. It's a way for the fans to connect with the artist and/or the band. This is simply because these instruments are the ones most commonly found in metal bands. Yet most of the bands' wardrobes have been replaced with jeans, tattoos, some piercing and T-shirts with morbid or sometimes demonic references embodied on them. With slight modifications, the typical rap fan's wardrobe consists of baggy clothes, one or many big chains, and caps (worn in whichever direction). The lyrics are also shouted, and occasionally sang. Since metal bands nowadays have a more diverse and open-minded style, metal fans might not appear alike to one another. With the always present evolution of metal & rap and the ever-changing ways of today's society, what metamorphosis will both styles undergo in the not too distant future?. For starters, metal lyrics discuss about a broad range of subjects, from fantastic make-believe worlds to apocalyptic death scenarios to real-life issues. As stated before, rap and metal weren't created overnight, as they are musical styles that evolved with time. Oppositely, rap lyrics mainly talk about real-life issues, especially about people living in poor neighbourhoods (ghettos). Rap groups today mainly wear baggy clothing, several big golden chains and bracelets, and sometimes very elaborate hair style. It should be noted that a "band" is a group of people who play instruments.
