Who's View Is It
"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is a short story written by Ambrose Bierce to describe different point of views in literature. Bierce's story is set at a railroad bridge, Owl Creek, in northern Alabama from which Peyton Farquhar will be hanged. Bierce brings this story to life by using a narrative dramatic point of view as the frame. Sometimes people mistake point of view with opinions and/beliefs. Point of view refers to the mode of narration; the position from which details are perceived and related. In "The Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" Ambrose Bierce showed the difference between telling the story in different points of view. Bierce used first person to interpret what Peyton Farquhar, the main character, was thinking before being hanged. The ope
Bierce used omniscient point of view to explain thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Without knowing the different point of views, one might think that the escape is real. This passage is the conversation of Farquhar and a Union army soldier. ning of the story is being told in third-person point of view. In conclusion, reading "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" brought together reality and perceptions. While in present tense, Bierce return to the actual hanging and how Farquhar is feeling "his neck was in pain and lifting his hands to it found it horribly swollen" (paragraph 18, passage 3). The speaker emphasizes on the position that Peyton Farquhar is in while at Owl Creek Bridge. The speaker is "all-knowing" of what is happening at Owl Creek Bridge. This is shown through a objective point of view. Bierce's success in rendering the perception of point of view is carried out. "The reality is not in the events, however, but in the perceptions" (105). This narration is telling the reader what Farquhar is thinking and what is happening. Bierce writes this passage to show Farquhar's actions and thoughts. Farquahar's mental image of his wife and kids changed the narration from past tense to present tense. The second passage explains how Farquhar got to the point of being hanged.
