legalization of Marijuana

"Man made beer, God made marijuana, who do you trust?" That is a popular bumper sticker that you can see on many cars today, and it applies very well to the topic of legalization of marijuana. Marijuana should be legalized due to the facts that it has been proven to be a useful medication, it is less harmful than many current legal drugs, and the government is losing a lot of money over taxes concerning marijuana. The first reason marijuana should be legalized has to do with its medicinal use, which is a very popular topic among the media. Lately the medicinal use of marijuana has gotten a lot of press due to several ballot measures trying to push legalization for medical use. Colorado was among the latest states to pass legislation for medicinal use of marijuana. Currently seven states have legalized marijuana for medical use and four more are seriously considering it (McMchon). However, even the states that have passed this legislation are having trouble. That is because all the amendments do make it legal for patients with a special registration card to possess a certain amount of marijuana (two ounces or six plants in Colorado). None of the amendments passed provide a way for users to acquire the

While medical marijuana has gained a lot of support lately, there are still those who do not believe it has any medical use at all, and that all the people supporting it simply just want to get high. Alcohol is another enormously popular drug that extremely dangerous yet remains legal. marijuana, it is still illegal for these people to buy it of the street. (Bender and Leone 193)This estimation is for the legalization of all drugs in America, but considering that marijuana is by far the most popular illegal drug in American, a large part of that $10 billion would most likely been seen. The unhealthiest part of marijuana is its most common delivery system, which is smoking it. The last reason why marijuana should be legalized seems to be much more important in today's society than the preceding two points of health and logic, it is of coarse, money. So again, while alcohol is one of our nations largest killers, it still remains in countless ads, and is also available at almost every corner store. But what you have to remember is that the cigarette smoker might be smoking twenty or more cigarettes a day, so over time they accumulate much more tar. As it is now known all three of these profound points happed to be true, yet marijuana is not legalized. It would seem that a cure for suffering people would be enough to legalize marijuana. Tobacco and alcohol are two legal drugs in the United States, yet they can have far worse repercussions than marijuana. While not a single person has died from just smokingmarijuana, it like stated before, remains underground and on the black market. Jonna Denny, a medicinal marijuana user living in California said, "I had to depend on friends of friends of friends, sometimes I worried about what I was getting" (McMahon). In 1986 for example, alcohol was identified as a contributing factor in 10% of work-related injuries, 40% of suicide attempts, and 40% or approximately 46,000 traffic deaths (Bender and Leone 194).
