Webster's Dictionary defines the word cloning, as a noun: A cell, group of cells, or organism that are descended from and genetically identical to a single common ancestor, such as a bacterial colony whose members arose from a single original cell, or an organism descended asexually from a single ancestor. They define the word as a verb as: To make multiple identical copies of, to reproduce or propagate asexually, to produce a copy of; imitate closely, to make multiple identical copies of a DNA sequence, to create or propagate from a clone cell.
             Reproduction, or replication, of an organism's DNA identity does not normally occur in mammals. The prospect of such replication for humans has resulted in the most controversial debate about reproduction ever in western civilization. The 1997 headlines in the February issue of Nature shouted, " Viable Offspring Derived from Fetal and Adult Mammalian Cells." 'Dolly' as the sheep was known, was the first adult mammal to be cloned. Scientists gasped- first in disbelief, then in awe. The news part of this story was not that a mammal had been cloned; that has been accomplished in the past. The news was that a mammal had been cloned from an adult cell- something noted scientist and Nobel prize winners had gone on record stating was very likely impossible. It turned out the cloning of Dolly was only the tip of the iceberg.
             Sheep, mice, cattle, goats, monkeys, and pigs have all been cloned from adult cells. These are all mammals. From a biological viewpoint humans are mammals. The next question as clear, if scientists can successfully clone all of these mammals, can they clone humans, who are also mammals? More importantly if they can, will they and/or should they?
