Colonial Period

The Colonial Period lasted from 1600 all the way to 1750. The most important historical event that took place in this period of time were the arrival of the Pilgrims on the east coast of North America and the meeting of the Indians which created the celebration that is now known as Thanksgiving. Puritans lived in Colonial America and followed the following rules: Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace, and Perseverance of the “saints”. Their religion was Christianity, but there was a little bit controversy between Catholics and Protestants. The four authors that were important for this time period are Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, William Bradford, Jonathon Edwards, and Anne Bradstreet. Cabeza de Vaca wrote journals, Bradford wrote journals as well, Edwards wrote sermons, and Bradstreet wrote poems.

Anne Bradstreet was a puritan born in England in 1612 and died in 1672. She was married to a brilliant scholar named Simon Bradstreet when she was just sixteen. They moved with Anne’s parents

All of these authors have made a difference in how America is today. He writes sermons and preaches to people in a way to scare them into Christianity.

William Bradford was born in 1950 and died in 1657.

As you can see there were many authors that wrote about Colonial America, be it in poems, journals, or sermons.

Jonathon Edwards was born in 1703 and died in 1758. Bradford’s piece, Of Plymouth Plantation, was a journal of his life on the Mayflower. One of her compositions, To My Dear and Loving Husband, was all about her love for her husband and how she prizes her love more than mines of gold or all the riches in the east. All of them had their own priceless experiences and words. She was the first American poet, she is remarkable not only because of that, but because she wrote when writing was considered a not proper occupation for a woman. He was ordained a minister when he was twenty-three years old. Edwards was the son and grandson of Puritan ministers. When Bradford was thirty years old he was a passenger on the Mayflower. Even more, she didn’t yell at me telling me I have no choice, that God has already decided if I’m going to heaven or hell. to New England to start a new life in the colonies. That piece of writing of hers accentuates her love for her husband and how she always wants to be with him, on earth and in Heaven.
