Colonial Period
The Colonial Period lasted from 1600 all the way to 1750. The most important historical event that took place in this period of time were the arrival of the Pilgrims on the east coast of North America and the meeting of the Indians which created the celebration that is now known as Thanksgiving. Puritans lived in Colonial America and followed the following rules: Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace, and Perseverance of the "saints". Their religion was Christianity, but there was a little bit controversy between Catholics and Protestants. The four authors that were important for this time period are Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, William Bradford, Jonathon Edwards, and Anne Bradstreet. Cabeza de Vaca wrote journals, Bradford wrote journals as well, Edwards wrote sermons, and Bradstreet wrote poems. Anne Bradstreet was a puritan born in England in 1612 and died in 1672. She was married to a brilliant scholar named Simon Bradstreet when she was just sixteen. They moved with Anne's parents
All of these authors have made a difference in how America is today. In my opinion I liked Anne Bradstreet's selections the best, she didn't bore me with a story of a long journey. He was ordained a minister when he was twenty-three years old. While on the Mayflower Bradford helped write the Mayflower Compact. " He says that pretty much you are just hanging on to God's finger tips, just barely hanging on, grasping on to heaven, that He at any point can just flick you off and let you burn to the fires of hell for eternity. William Bradford was born in 1950 and died in 1657. He writes sermons and preaches to people in a way to scare them into Christianity. Edwards was the son and grandson of Puritan ministers. All of them had their own priceless experiences and words. That piece of writing of hers accentuates her love for her husband and how she always wants to be with him, on earth and in Heaven. to New England to start a new life in the colonies. Bradford and the Pilgrims met the Native Americans and they came to peace terms, which consisted of six rules or compromises, but the Pilgrims got the better end of the deal. As you can see there were many authors that wrote about Colonial America, be it in poems, journals, or sermons. He soon became known for his "preaching of terror" Edwards preached that God decided ahead of time who would go to heaven and who would go to hell. When Bradford was thirty years old he was a passenger on the Mayflower.
