The Cask of Amontidillo

Poe's story "The Cask of Amontillado" is characterized by irony, and is filled with trickery, deception, and revenge to explain the psychology of the characters. The entire story is based on revenge and trickery. Not only does the main character want revenge, but he wants to enjoy it. The two characters in "The Cask of Amontillado" are Fortunato and Montresor. Fortunato is an eminently successful man. He enjoys the good things in life, is clever and has no scruples. Montresor tells us that regarding paintings and gems he is a complete quack. But he does pride himself on his connoisseurship of wines. Montresor like Poe, is a man of spirit. As Fortunato came to he said "But is it not getting late? Will not they be awaitng us at the palazzo, the Lady Fortunato and the rest? Let us be gone. Like a fool, Fortunato follows him down in his catacomb. As Fortunato drank the wine he began to feel the effects and soon he was drunk. " Fortunato then said "For the love of God, Montresor!" Montressor said " Yes, for the love of God ("The Cask" 224)!" This summed up Montresor's revenge. Also Montresor had on a tight-fitting party striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells (Poe 220). This is an excellent example of foreshadowing. The story is told through the eyes of Montresor . " Little did he know that he would soon join them. " Montresor said "Yes, let us be gone. The main goal of the main character in this story was to not only get revenge but to enjoy it. When they reached the Amontillado Montresor chained Fortunato up to the wall and began laying teirs of masonry. He plans revenge as if he were creating a work of art. As Montresor did this Fortunato realized hat was happening but it was too late. In conclusion, Poe's story is characterized by irony, and is filled with trickery, deception, and revenge.
