Suicide

Suicide is unfortunately not an uncommon topic for many people. It has taken the lives of many people in this country and many countries throughout the world. The rates of suicide and suicide attempts among adolescents and young adults are currently on the rise. In fact, in the "United States, 4,784 adolescents and young adults took their own lives in 1995 alone (Johnson, Krug, and Potter 74). Many factors could contribute to this such as pressure from parents and family, rejection from friends and/or peers, or conflict within himself. Additionally, "youth suicide is a tragedy, not only ending the life of a young person but also violently upsetting the lives of the victims' family members, friends, and neighbors (Johnson, Krug, and Potter 74). When parents pressure their children they don't realize how much influence they have on their child's life and their decisions. Parents can have the tendency to have high expectations of what they want their children's life to be like and what they want their children to accomplish. It is a common saying that parents always want their children to have a better life and achieve mor

Young people have seemed to think that suicide is "a way out" for all of their problems. "Suicide Note" is a good example of the youth are going through. Many would agree that with the increasing numbers that "suicide prevention efforts should be directed to young people" (Johnson, Krug, and Potter 80). In the worst case scenario, a child that feels like that they cannot do as good as their parents would like them to, then they can become suicidal. In her suicide note she states "tasks do not come easily. She probably began to think that it was a way to make everyone around her happy and she wouldn't have to deal with pressures from school or her parents. Suicide among adolescence and young adults "has nearly tripled between 1950 and 1995" (Johnson, Krug, and Potter 74). The girl most likely saw suicide as her "way out" from all the pressures of college life and her parents. She most likely began to have conflict within herself and the thoughts became like a reality to her. When she feels rejected by the people that are close to her then she may have been depressed and then the thoughts of suicide start to come about. If the young people had someone to talk to about their problems then it could help prevent my suicides from actually happening. A lot of responsibility comes with the transition to college life. Also, as mentioned earlier, the pressure to do well in school from her parents. In the poem "Suicide Note," by Janice Mirikitani, the girl commits suicide because she feels like she has disappointed her parents. She repeats this to say that she didn't fell that she meet her parent's standards while in college and in other ways in her life.
