A Raisin in the Sun
In Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, each character clings to a dream. Mama, Walter Lee, and Beneatha Younger portray three different characters striving for three different dreams. Each Younger has a vision of what life could be and Hansberry shows how Walter Lee, Beneatha, and Mama attempt to achieve their cherished dreams. First, Beneatha Younger's dream is to become a doctor (Brantingham 1300). In order to achieve her goal, Beneatha attends a local college. However, when Beneatha learns about Walter Lee losing her college money, she begins to seriously question the validity of her dream (Hansberry 133). When asked if she still wanted to be a doctor Beneatha replies, "No--I wanted to cure. It used to be so important to me. [...] It used to matter. I used to care" (Hansberry 133). When
She tells him that she will consider his suggestion and then he departs (Brantingham 1302). Mama Younger decides to use part of the money for the house and give the rest to Walter Lee, therefore allowing him to pursue his dreams (Brantingham 1301). Even if it seems as if Walter Younger did not achieve his dreams, he did receive a new sense of himself with the powerful ability to make wise decisions. He tries to attain this goal, but because he is black, the opportunity is slim and problems become plentiful (Galens and Spampinato 187). In summary, Lorraine Hansberry's portrayal of three African-Americans and the struggle for their dreams shows how far one will go to achieve their dreams. After learning of Mama's purchase, Walter adamantly blames her for ruining his dreams stating, "SO you butchered up a dream of mine-you-who always talking 'bout your children's dreams. A Raisin in the Sun is a novel about striving for a dream and the realization of it. Secondly, Mama Younger's dream is to just improve her family's living conditions. One afternoon Mama goes downtown to "Tend to some business" (Hansberry 90-91). For Walter Lee this becomes opening a liquor store (Hansberry 33). Beneatha, Mama, and Walter Lee display how three characters become engrossed with their own dreams, and in turn focus on only that.
