A Raisin in the Sun

             In Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, each character clings to a dream. Mama, Walter Lee, and Beneatha Younger portray three different characters striving for three different dreams. Each Younger has a vision of what life could be and Hansberry shows how Walter Lee, Beneatha, and Mama attempt to achieve their cherished dreams.
             First, Beneatha Younger's dream is to become a doctor (Brantingham 1300). In order to achieve her goal, Beneatha attends a local college. However, when Beneatha learns about Walter Lee losing her college money, she begins to seriously question the validity of her dream (Hansberry 133). When asked if she still wanted to be a doctor Beneatha replies, "No--I wanted to cure. It used to be so important to me. [...] It used to matter. I used to care" (Hansberry 133). When Joseph Asagai arrives at the Younger home on moving day, he proposes that Beneatha follow him to Nigeria and pursue her dreams there (Hansberry 136-137). She tells him that she will consider his suggestion and then he departs (Brantingham 1302). Maybe Beneatha cannot afford to go to an accredited American medical school, but she is given the opportunity to go to Africa where she can pursue her dreams there.
             Secondly, Mama Younger's dream is to just improve her family's living conditions. After Walter Lee Sr. passes, a ten thousand dollar insurance check arrives addressed to Mama (Hansberry 68). Mama concludes this is the prime time to fulfill her dreams for her children. One afternoon Mama goes downtown to "Tend to some business" (Hansberry 90-91). Later she asks Travis what he thinks happened to the money and Mama replies, "She went out and she bought you a house" (Hansberry 91). Everyone is ecstatic after learning about the house, except Walter Lee (Hansberry 94-95).
