The Differences and Similariti
The Differences and Similarities of Oedipus and Creon Looking at Oedipus and Creon, they hold the same positions, and act similarly to a certain extent. Oedipus and Creon have there own style of motivation, intention and goals that are showed throughout Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone, written by Sophocles. They are two of the major characters associated within the three plays. At first they are displayed to be different, but through out the plays they are considered alike. Oedipus first makes his appearance as the king of Thebes. He gained this loyal spot by solving the Sphinx riddle. He's had no experience at king, let alone being part of a royal family. Oedipus had no real motivation to become king; he had no idea that he had a chance to be ruler. His motivation begins after the fact that he became king of Thebes. He is motivated to help the kingdom from its illness; the crops are diseased, poverty is striking the people and everything is becoming worse. "It was no man asleep you awoke-ah no! - But one in bitter tears and one perplexed in thought, found wandering. Who clutched the only remedy that came: to send the son of Menoeceus, Creon- my own Jocasta's brother- to the place Apollo h
Oedipus's intentions are to keep the villagers happy, and to help bring peace back into Thebes. Creon's is motivated to prove Oedipus the murderer of King Lauis, and is the cause of this horrible plague. At first glance they may seem alike, but Oedipus and Creon are two different people. Creon asks one of the sentry to take Oedipus away from the state. You can see this by looking at the motivation, intention and goal's displayed of both characters within the three plays written by Sopocles. aunts at Pythia to learn what act or covenant of mine could still redeem the state"(7)Oedipus seems very sure of his words, and is determined to find the cause, and solve the problem that has arisen. He just wants the people of the state to feel safe. He states, "Let us say that Death is going to coming between"(217). The intentions of these characters are both alike and different. An example of this can be found in the play, Oedipus the King, where Jocasta is continuously trying to stop him from hearing the truth of his life. It's more for them than me, though more my own than my own soul"(8). Oedipus says, "Persuading from the truth? Pursuing it? I must"(39). Oedipus is determined to figure out his past, and where he has come from. Antigone went against his word, and he returns the favor by sentencing her to death.
