In 1651, Thomas Hobbes wrote Leviathan, thus introducing the backbone of realist view in politics. Hobbes believed that humans posses a desire to dominate, and this urge is the base for our political interactions. I agree with Hobbes in this “animus dominandi” as the driving factor behind man’s political thought. Although I agree greatly with Hobbes, I would still classify myself as an idealist. I believe that through idealist actions it is possible to attain greater power than through the heavy-handed ways of realism.
A realist belief is that the very nature of politics is increasing power, keeping power, or demonstrating power. Because of this emphasis on power, realists wish to limit power of groups like the U.N. Force or

Idealists would be in favor of safeguarding morality before promoting national interests. This world may never be perfect, but like horseshoes and hand-grenades, it makes a difference to come close. Cooperation between nations drives idealism. A realist would believe that a display of force would be more effective than economic sanctions. Idealists support organizations like the U. To avoid war, idealists would try alternate methods like economic sanctions to obtain goals. Realist’s key belief is that those with the power should play the most important role in decision making. Community is believed to be the natural human desire instead of war. Realists oppose a world federal government, because it would eliminate the competitive nature of politics. Whoever can deliver this has ultimate power.
These views seem to be in sharp contrast to the more peaceful idealist beliefs. Safeguarding national interest is essential to keeping power, and is believed to be policy makers’ foremost concern. Good-will can create allies which will only increase a nation’s power. Justice is believed to be the main value that transcends national allegiances and boundaries.
