RAW

Different ideas of an institution can be perceived through a particular composer’s expression. Raw by Scott Monk portray an institute as a place of healing and rehabilitation, through Brett Delton’s changes. However One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest directed by Milos Forman, depicts an institution to be; a place for wrongful punishment and misuse of power. Both of the composers use narrative features such as plot, themes, characterisation, attitudes as well as event settings in their texts. In addition, Monk uses linguistic devices: including imagery, sound devices and figurative devices. Whereas Forman uses cinematic techniques such as music, lighting, shot angle and types of shot to reflect his attitude. The two major differences in these texts are the genre and the composer’s attitude to institutions.

The two different types of genre use their own specific techniques as well as the narrative features.

In Raw, Monk uses many realistic examples to involve responders in feeling what Brett feels. For example, during his trip from Sydney to Moree, while the two police take breaks along the trip, Brett was left in his boiling steel framed-cage. Without a proper drink and rest, he travelled for twelve hours straight. By using colloq

Although as anti-institution Forman might seems, he has also characterised a little hope for the institution in the voice of the Chief. Although Monk’s vision is pro-institutions, he also created a character to reflect the failure of a rehabilitating institution.

In cheaper one, Monk begins with a loud ‘bang’; this use of onomatopoeia enables responders to generate an aural image in their mind.

By the different application of devices in different genre types such as film and novel, both Monk and Forman are able to communicate their information for institutions. This kind of resolution is a very common practice in the 1970’s and through Forman’s plot line we can sense his disapproval. Also the close-up and high angle shots on nurse Ratched, depicts her as the authority in the ward. In contrast every other personnel working in the hospital represented the opposite of McMurphy. Through Josh and Sam we can perceive Monk’s vision of the benefits of institutions, as mentioned. In addition to just the different genre types, the different attitudes are generally polarised, however both composers showed signs of the other’s main argument.

In regards to the cinematic techniques Forman used, it included music, diagetic and non-diagetic, the different lighting and angle shots. In addition it grasps our attention creating suspense for what we are about to read (the sentencing of Brett’s wrongful deeds). uial languages and common rebellious jargon; such as ‘cop are pigs’ and ‘yeah’, Monk was able to bring Brett’s feelings to us. In one of his comment he mentioned that it would be safer in the hospital than the outside after witnessing how the Whites ‘worked on his father’. The combination of these techniques enables Forman to communicate his opinions of the institution and the individuals. Other imagery used are visual, when Brett was describing what he saw when he arrived at the Farm, gustatory; when Brett ate for the first time in twelve hours of travelling, tactile; “he spidered his hands along her sides”, and olfactory, “he smelt her hair”.
