I Love Lucy

The show begins with the point of attack of Lucy and Ricky sitting in their living room; the neighbors and best friends, Fred and Ethel Mertz, were also there. The next part would fall into the category of exposition, basically setting the viewer up with information for the upcoming action. Lucy was reading an article in the newspaper about who was going to play the character of Don Juan in an upcoming Broadway play. Lucy was adlibbing, from the newspaper, how Ricky was married to a luscious redhead and all the other women should stay away. Of course everyone in the room instantly says, ”that’s not what it says” and Lucy acknowledges that they were right. Lucy was just a little jealous that she was not mentioned in the newspaper article as being Ricky Ricardo’s wife. Ricky then tries to set Lucy at ease by telling her that he always wants his luscious redhead by his side. He also states he is taking her to Hollywood because he wants her by his side. This last part of the first scene is the precipitating event that produces the rest of the story line. This next part is where the rising action starts. Lucy promptly tells Ricky that she can remember like yesterday when Ricky did not want her by his side. Ricky quickly says to her, “

. . .

Lucy overhears Fred telling Ricky about the camping trip and thinks the guys are planning a trip for the families. Ricky is starting to think it is going to be harder then he thought to make it rough on Lucy. Toward the end of the second scene, the viewer has seen more rising action of Ricky plotting against Lucy with a miserable camping trip. This continues throughout the show with much rising action. Ricky then realizes that Ethel is in the tree and tells her to get down. Little does Lucy know but Ricky has an ulterior motive of making the camping trip so rough on Lucy that she will never want to go again; however, Ethel stops by the apartment the day before the camping trip and lets the cat out of the bag. Little does Ricky know that Lucy is riding in the car with Ethel back to camp. Ricky then suggests one last thing before the climax, and that is to shoot the gun at a small tin can that seems to be a long distance away. Then the story unravels with the normal scenes from I Love Lucy and the great comedy actions that occur throughout the show. Ricky suggests that they go fishing first so he takes Lucy on a three-hour hike to get to the perfect fishing spot. Ricky does not realize that Ethel is up in the tree and hitting a piece of metal every time Lucy shoots at the can; this makes it seem like Lucy is hitting the target each time. Ricky does not believe that Lucy could even come close to hitting the can with the gun but Lucy aims in at the can and BANG! DING! and hits the can. The dramatic structure for this show would be that Lucy sets up the viewer for telling her side of a story. When Ricky returns from his fishing, he asks Lucy how she did thinking she would catch nothing, and is amazed at how many fish Lucy caught when he caught nothing. I think this is where the denouement is at, due to the fact that the story is becoming almost too far fetched, and Ricky has to figure out soon that he is being played for a fool.
