Bill Gates: The Road Ahead
In the #1 New York Times Bestseller "The Road Ahead", Bill Gates reveals to us his personal lamentations on the entire technology landscape. The entirety of the book is progressed in a barrage of in-depth examinations of technological advancements with some rare glimpse of Gate's personal life. The book takes on a journey reviewing the information age and computer industry, internet and content revolution, and education and home connectivity.Gates talks about how information has become such a valuable commodity. Information was freely available and its value will not be challenged by inaccessibility. The only case that would pose a problem to it would be when information is wrong, in which case it may have a negative value. The reason information is getting to be so essential is because it's important to know how technology is altering the ways we handle information. The computer industry has been an important factor in Gate's and Microsoft's success as well as other software and hardware entities. Gates speaks of critical factors: positive and negative spirals. These two key factors became great lessons that Gates learned from the industry and applied in the development of Microsoft. Besides these two main factors, Gat
Most, if not all of the innovations developed mentioned previously will be incorporated in homes. Like I mentioned earlier, a lot of his views and predictions are based among the extent of the capabilities of today's technology. Gates talks about how the basic purpose of the PC aligns wonderfully with the mission of educational institutions. After having read this book, I feel that Gates has presented his viewpoints very well. To Gates disappointment, Gates underestimated the time required for these technologies to be adopted by the industry. In the book, Gates also talks about the internet and discusses it's relevance to future of computing and ultimately every aspects of people's everyday lives. Besides the learning experiences expressed by Gates, the review of the computer industry was quite insightful. I believe that most of the predictions and new technology mentioned in this book is all possible within the time frame that Gates indicates. An interesting aspect that caught my attention is the positive and negative spirals. It provides the readers enough background as to give the readers a better insight into the computer industry without having to be involved in the chaos. Though, some forms of technology are in existence today, they are in they're primitive states, but ultimately their potential is limitless in the near future. Also Gates assures that the computers will not be meant to replace the teachers, but simply a tool to aid students learning because nothing will be able to replace the teacher's individual care. Maybe we're to busy reading into the accomplishments and the technological developments that are evident throughout the book. Like the emergence of the internet, Gates chats about the content revolution. Also creating the network requires the installation of expensive physical infrastructures like lines, switches, and servers.
