Many writers created during the 18th century, but none influenced so many people as did Emerson. Emerson was confused with his place in society in the beginning of his life, but as his ideas of philosophy grew, so did his reputation. Emerson turned his back on past family generations when he walked out on his career in ministry. As he absorbed knowledge and ideas of other philosophers, so did his own mind begin to expand. Before Emerson realized it, he was a well know lecturist who had people listening to him and being strongly influenced by his thoughts. Ralph Waldo Emerson, a writer and leader of his own philosophy, gained his recognition and knowledge through his lectures, his religion, and his own ideas as a philosopher.
Ralph Waldo Emerson’s great lectures were based around nature’s ordeals and his religious and philosophical beliefs. Emerson a leader of religion to many led a character of great influence in the minds of the past and present society. Emerson believed that people should rely on only themselves to get where they needed in life, other’s help would only go so far. Unitarianism was a perfect choice for Emerson because of his strong beliefs in self-reliance and individuality. The basis of these great ideas, though, was the truth, which Emerson believed and followed by. “ ‘The purpose of life seems to be to acquaint man with himself”, he wrote in his journal in 1833” (Kunitz 254). Emerson was a leader to some and just a man to many, but his ideas were of a gifted magnitude that ignited a hot fire amongst the minds of society in the places he preached and lectured. Ralph Waldo Emerson, a noble leader and guide, still lives on today through the minds and hearts of the present gifted society. To summarize these characteristics in Emerson’s philosophical views, he believed, “ ‘A life in harmony with Nature, the love of truth and virtue, will purge the eyes to be able to understand her text’” (Derleth 65). He spoke of life and how to live in harmony with its host, nature.
Ralph Waldo Emerson, a leader to his own degree spread his knowledge through his lecturing, his religious ideas, and his own theories through which spread his philosophical views. ‘The truth of truth consists in this, that it is self-evident, self-subsistent, and self-reliant…You don’t get a candle to see the sun rise’” (Derleth 41). Emerson was right though, without some truth and knowledge of life, there is no way that society could succeed today. “ ‘We need not fear that we can anything by the progress of the soul…’” (Kunitz 254).
