The American idea of "Manifest Destiny" played a very important role in our politicaldealings with native Americans in general and the Mexican government in particular. Theconcept of "Manifest Destiny" was for the United States to control the land from "Sea toShining Sea" or the present day boundaries of the United States.The Americans believed that nothing must stand in the way for them to accomplish thisgoal. The most significant agreement these groups agreed on was theTreaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the war in 1848. to be an empire, it had to have a strong navy, a canal through Panama,and dominance of the Caribbean. Why didn't the war end inAugust of 1847? Also, What is needed for peace negotiations to be successful? In Augustof 1847, neither the Americans nor the Spanish wanted to be satisfied with the currentoutcome. It stated that Mexico wouldgive up all claims of Texas, and that Texas would belong to the United States.
