The Basics of Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, non-denominational Christian housing organization. This wonderful organization welcomes any volunteers that want to help build simple, decent, and affordable houses for those who are less fortunate. This organization was started because of major need for affordable housing. There are currently 30 million households in the U.S. with housing problems, 14.5 million households qualify for government aid, but yet only 4.1 million are actually receiving aid.
In addition, there are 10.9 million individuals living in worst-case housing situations of which 3.6 million are children, 1.4 million are elderly, and 1.3 million are disabled adults. Habitat for Humanity started in 1976 and since then has built more than 100,000 houses in more than 79 different countries, including around 30,000 homes in America alone. This wonderful organization was founded by Millard Fuller and his wife Linda Fuller. Habitat for Humanity has more than 1,900 affiliates worldwide that help plan and coordinate these projects. Our local affiliate is the Habitat for Humanity

These houses are offered to families according to their need; their ability to repay the no-profit, no interest mortgage, and their willingness to work with the organization. Homeowners work with the organization by investing hundreds of hours of their own labor, called sweat equity, into building their Habitat house and the houses of others. Therefore, by the time a family gets their own house they have worked very hard and ultimately deserve it.
