Female Genital Mutilation
Female genital mutilation is a horrendous injustice that occurs everyday in this world. Female genital mutilation is wrong for several reasons. It is wrong because women can experience physical health consequences, psychological health consequences and it is a form of gender discrimination. In societies that practice female genital mutilation women will never be considered equal they will always be considered below men. According to the World Health Organization, "Female genital mutilation constitutes all procedures which involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs whether for cultural or any other non-therapeutic reasons." Firstly, female genital mutilation causes serious health problems to women who have been mutilated. Women who have the most sever mutilation will suffer from health problems for their whole lives. The procedure is often carried out with crude tools used for mutilating the genitalia. Examples of these tools are scissors, scalpels, pieces of glass, or razor blades (World Health Organization). Since the rights of the female are being ignored for the wants of men who want to keep their women in check. Also, women are afraid to eat during their pregnancy fearing that their baby maybe too large to pass through her vaginal canal. Anesthetics are rarely used and relatives must hold down the female screaming in pain while she is being mutilated. However, it is not hopefully people who believe in this practice will be taught that the risks far out way the benefits. It was custom in Miriam's part of the world that the husband penetrates his bride in a single night. As one can see female genital mutilation is a heinous act that should not occur in the world. Women who are mutilated suffer severe health problems, psychological problems, and are made to feel inferior and controlled by men. Some babies are born with birth defects because their mother was afraid to eat because of the pain she may experience. Their bodies are not beholden to them, but beholden to their husband or father. Ever since their honeymoon evening Miriam has never been able to enjoy intercourse with her husband. The health risks associated with it should be enough to end the practice. Women will also suffer from persistent pelvic infections. In other words, it is the male in a patriarchal society asserting his "dominance" over a woman.
