Q: How is vision portrayed throughout the course of King Lear?
Within King Lear, one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, there is a recurring theme involving vision. The play concentrates on both mental and physical aspects of such vision. Two of the characters from King Lear that deal mostly with such images are King Lear himself and the Earl of Gloucester. In essence, King Lear and Gloucester unite the dual conflicts portrayed through vision within the play.
Lear’s conflict throughout a majority of the play is his lack of clarity, understanding and insight into his relationships with the other characters, namely his three daughters. Consequently, his failure to comprehend this is the principal cause of his demise. In contrast, Gloucester is faced with both aspects of conflict in terms of his vision. Both of these characters portray how this concept of vision is entwined into the plot in terms of the character relations. “I have no way and therefore want mo eyes; I stumbled when I saw. Had Lear learned to view life and interpret things with more than just physical sight, he may have changed his fate, along with many of the other characters along the way. His initial lack of insight leads him to believe that Edmund, the evil bastard son, is in fact the virtuous one, calling his other son, Edgar, “abhorred villain, unnatural, detested, brutish villain” (1. Further along the plot, however, once Gloucester is attacked by Cornwall and Regan, he suffers with his blindness and learns the importance of trusting your instincts. 151-2), and he too was banished for his honesty. Although despite his loss, the irony portrayed here is Gloucester’s enhanced vision following the actions taken against him. Full oft ‘tis seen, our means secure us, and our mere defects prove our commodities” (4. 157-8), in hopes that he may enlighten the King.
