Teenage Conformity

Teenagers today face many issues. One of the most common but often overlookedis that of finding their own true identities. Although some teens will find themselves, mostsimply choose to conform. To conform means "to be or become of the same form". Theybecome like everyone else is. In other words they become like sheep, following and neverleading. The average teenage, no matter how much theyenjoyed chess would not join the chess team simply because it is considered uncool. This extends to include the sports the popular kids are part of; the extracurricularactivities they belong to; what kind of music they listen to; what movies they go to see andin general how they spend their time. They will do anything to avoidbeing different and being fat is being different, odd. We also can't forget the fact that the stars are wearing these labels, and iffamous people are wearing them they must be cool, right? Teenagers need to step backand say to themselves, "Is it really that important that I dress like my friends? Would it bethat big of a deal if I dressed the way I wanted to?". They see the ads in magazines, on television and hear themon the radio. ing more than one job in order to have enough to purchase those $120 jeans. Food, or lack there of, becomes anobsession. You have theright to do whatever your mind chooses. Why?Is it that these clothes are of better quality? More durable? No, they purchase them simplybecause they don't want to be different or stand out. You are unique, no onehas the right to defile you, to suppress you, manipulate you, or to force you. Teenagers will buy overpriced clothing, starve themselves to be thinner and evenacquire the same interests as others, but to what end? The instability caused during thistime in a person's life causes them to be less sure of themselves than ever before. In aneffort to be liked or popular, teenagers tend to give up their right to think on their own. I think you can be different and that thedifferences are what make you what you are.
