America has grown into a very capitalistic, consumer-targeting society. Advertising is a gimmick that markets have been using to target the consumer audience. Although some look at the growing consumer oriented markets as progress, Kurt Vonnegut uses his novel Breakfast of Champions to downgrade the whole issue of advertising and consumerism. He emphasizes how the market economy has become incorporated into our language, has manipulated our actions, and has had a somewhat adverse effect on American society. In Breakfast of Champions, criticism on the whole advertising industry is a frequent theme. It is phenomenal how advertisement has affected a whole array of people in so many ways. Children three years of age being exposed to "Power Ranger laser guns," to seniors of age 85 watching infomercials on the "Clapper," are a huge amount of people being targeted. Not only are these advertisements appealing, they also subconsciously become part of the consumers' language. The word "Kleenex" is used to refer to soft pieces of tissue. Even words that are used by all of society can at the same time be the property of an individual. Through his character, Kilgore Trout, Vonnegut analyzes how this whole concept of internalization. In the book, Wayne Hoobler sees a "Hertz" truck whiz by. People believe their dreams of emotional fulfillment are achieved through buying a product used by their idol. " One truck had the sign "AJAX" on the side. The signs we see around us alter our whole use of language. The producers are becoming more and more aggressive, and our lives are going to be controlled by them. Boxers are not only people that throw punches in a ring, but also are shorts worn as undergarments. Advertising has also had more subtle affects. It is dangerous to use words in any random context. They believe that they can aspire to become the equivalent of that athlete. People are then lead to buying the product under the impression that they are getting more than just the product itself. " Some mottos and words used for advertising clearly do not make sense. However, contacts are also a product that is inserted onto one's eyeball to make him/her see clearer. Trout asks the man why he named the company "Pyramid" and the trucker responds, "He liked the sound of it.
