Is Religion a Necessary Part?

After the September 11, many questions regarding religion have been raised all over the world. Today every individual in America is wondering " Is religion really necessary". "Aren't we more safe without it?" Americans have experienced this question for the first time in history, however that is not the case with most of the other countries. The place from where I come i.e., India has always been targeted with invasions by different religion. India was once a land of gold and knowledge. Aryans, nomadic tribes from North were the first ones to come to this land. They along with the already existing Dravidians thought that food, water and shelter should not be the main goal of life. They felt that human life was much more precious and that it should be utilized in a better way. So after a lot of thinking and discussions they came up with a ideal way of living and called that way of life Hinduism. Group of people who had proper knowledge about Hinduism went from place to place and tried to spread this concept. Thus, through religion, the people of India got the concept of better life. This concept brought discipline amongst people and thus helped them develop and improve in all fields. Everybody appreciated the concept of religion

Dewey defined religion as "the active relation between the ideal and the actual," Whitehead as, "what a man does with his solitariness"; and Westermark as, "a regardful attitude towards a supernatural being, on whom man feels himself dependent and to whom he makes an appeal in his worship". The other concepts are influenced by the geographical, social and linguistic diversities. The first is our rationally based academic study of religion is the study of what is observable and includes the study of what is observable which includes historical knowledge of the rituals, mythologies, religious communities, ideas, teachings, institutions, arts, architecture. Thus, the modern world is driving by the same concepts we had in Stone Age. We are all going towards the same place where we were before the religion actually started. Thus all religion have a same concept and same ideals that of betterment of human life. While these Hindu- Muslim fights were going on, the Britishers came and captured the whole of India. A big part of difficulty in understanding religion is that of definition. They would loot, burn houses and even kill those Hindus who refused to convert themselves to Muslim religion. The churches started giving away food, clothes and money to the needy that converted themselves to Christianity. We all need to realize that since religion is a way of leading a better life, being fanatic about it will not help. If religion is for the betterment of human life, then why is religion the main cause of suffering for most of the people? Where modern world is driving at? According to Yves "If a person took God and religious values seriously, he or she would be among the greatest critics of present society, where religious values are given lip service, at best. Why is that so? The actual understanding of the term religion is missing from our lives.
