Today in America all of us enjoy many freedoms that we take for granted . We can practice whatever religion we wish, we can speak out against the government without fear of persecution, we can do almost anything that makes us happy. Most people do not even think of what it would be like to be unable to get married. Marriage is a symbolic and legal bond that same-sex couples are denied the right to. At this time, there is an amendment proposed to put a nation wide ban on the legality of same sex marriage. Allowing this ban is a grave injustice to human rights and cannot be allowed to pass. Same sex marriage does not, in any way jeopardize the sanctity of the institution of marriage or harm American society’s view on that institution.
Most people are against same-sex marriages for religious and moral reasons. About three out of every four people are opposed.(Bidstrup). When asked to rationalize their opinions most give very shaky responses. The main reason people are against same-sex marriages is that it goes against their religion. We should regard it as scandalous that two people could claim to love each other and not want to sanctify their love with marriage and fidelity (Brooks). Social security also leaves same-sex couples out. The legal side of marriage does not have to have anything to do with a religion. Granting the right of same-sex couples to marry does not require any religious organizations or churches to adopt the same rules. The United States is based on freedoms: freedoms of religion, speech, press etc, all of these possible due to one important law in the constitution: Separation of Church and State. We have all heard of how expensive it is to get health insurance if you are not a full-time worker or if your employer does not provide it. Most pension plans exclude a same-sex partner from receiving benefits because that person is not legally their spouse (HRC). Virginia case was quoted "Almighty god created the races. The surviving member of the relationship could also be forced to pay up to 70% tax on his or her partner’s 401k retirement plan if they were to inherit it. Consider the Catholic Church’s position on divorce. All in all, same-sex couples are not treated justly going against everything America stands for. Gay and lesbian partners receive no survivor benefits after the loss of there loved one, losing them on average $5528 dollars every year. Again the legal side of marriage is the only thing being argued here, not the religious side.
