Hamlet

What’s The Hurry?

Hamlet could possibly be the most popular of William Shakespeare’s series of tragedies. The main character, Hamlet, may be the most complex and controversial character any playwright has ever created. His erratic behavior poses multiple questions. Is he being rational in his acts and sacrificing himself for the greater good or is he simply insane? How and why does Hamlet continually move from one state of mind to the other? What significance does this have in this particular play of Shakespeare? Throughout the play Hamlet goes through several different stages of life, while constantly being in a angst-ridden and distressed mental state, caught between love, grief, and vengeance. His different states of mind are the result of his controversial personality and his ability to objectively analyze any situation. For many 20th century readers this causes great frustration while reading this play. They may continually ask themselves, “What is holding him back?” and “He has the chance, why not just kill him and be done with it?”. Today we are so used to ruthless killing in movies, and violence without a second thought that Hamlet’s agonizing mental struggle is something tha

. . .

For all he knows the vision he saw that he assumed to be a ghost could have been a hallucination that his friends went along with so he wouldn’t feel crazy. I’ll have grounds More relative than this. Within a month, Ere yet the salt of most unrighteous tears Had left the flushing in her galled eyes, She married. O cursed spite, That ever I was born to set it right!” (Norton, 1688). The emotions that this causes inside of Hamlet unbalance him and blur his judgment. When he says this we see that he is battling the idea of revenge within. Hamlet sometimes appears to consider this idea, however, he accepts the ghost's story, at first with a small bit of caution, and then unquestioningly after the Play Scene. He does not know anything for sure. Hamlet’s mental stability is not incredibly reliable at this point, just as anyone’s would be I imagine. From seeing these many theories about Hamlet’s character as a reader we can assume that Shakespeare made his character complicated intentionally . O, most wicked speed, to post With such dexterity to incestuous sheets! It is not, nor it cannot come to good” (Norton, 1676). We can now see clearly that Hamlet fears that this could all possibly be in his head and maybe he‘s crazy, and therefore by carrying it out he would be committing a sin.

Hamlet is a person of exceptional intelligence and sensitivity. Given the misfortune of his recent events he is asking himself, “Is there someone higher?” and “Who can I consult for advice?”. As readers we need to step back and think about what we would do if put in this position, and be sensitive to his prediciment, because with the emphasis that Shakespeare placed on Hamlet’s moral struggle it becomes questionable as to if maybe Hamlet was a real person.
