Do the Right Thing vs Black Ro

Do the Right Thing and Black Robe are two completely different films, yet they exhibit many of the same themes and conflicts. Do the Right Thing is set in modern times in one of the worst neighborhoods in all of Brooklyn. While Black Robe is set in the early 1600's in the wilderness of the Northern part of the United States. The main characters in each film face a lot of similar struggles, issues, and problems within the environment they live. One of the significant parallels I noticed is between that of the two main characters: Sal and Father LaForgue. They are both minorities in the society which they live in. Sal, an Italian, owns a pizzeria in a predominantly black area of NYC, while Father LaForgue, a Frenchman, travels with the Indians. Sal knows he has to be careful about what is said within and around his restaurant. If the wrong thing were said, the whole neighborhood would have his ass, as it did at the end of the movie. LaForgue also cannot afford to say anything offensive to the Indians, because he is trying to convert the Indians. Throughout both movies, the main characters are just working towards a common goal. Sal is trying to sell as many pizzas as

I find that the most amazing parallel came at the end of both movies when they both ended in disaster. At the end of Do the Right Thing Sal also loses everything. All of the black people throughout the neighborhood are kind to these guys because they are black and from the neighborhood. There are, however, many differences between Do the Right Thing and Black Robe. LaForgue lost his son at the end when he departs from him with Annuka after all of her people were killed by the Iroquois and then LaForgue returns to the Huron Mission by himself. Another interesting comparison is the personality of the two main characters. Sal's situation is relatively similar to that of LaForgue's. Then he has the nerve to chase her when she leaves and then he leaves his own father. These two films are so different, yet so similar. possible and LaForgue is trying to convert as many Indians as possible. They are treated nice throughout the neighborhood because they are within that same dominant culture. If Chomina would have caught them having sex, Daniel probably would have been killed. After he smashes the boom box, all hell breaks loose and his restaurant is vandalized and then burned down right there in front of him. There are many more differences in these movies including the setting, Mookie and his role, the time period and many others, but for this paper I wanted to focus more on the parallels instead of the contrasts. He then just ignores Mestigoit, pushes him away, and splashes him with his paddle.
