Hockey Genius Scotty Bowman

Douglas Hunter, who wrote A Life in Hockey, says, "Elton John sings, but he can't carry a football an inch, let alone for vital yards. Emmitt Smith can. But he can't write a short story that ends with the snow falling softly upon the Bog of Allen and into the dark mutinous Shannon waves, falling faintly through the universe, upon all the living and the dead. James Joyce could do that. Scotty Bowman can do none of the above. Does this mean Bowman has no talent? No, the man's a genius." William Scott Bowman was born in Montreal Canada on November 16, 1933. We grew up there doing what any kid his age did in Canada, and that is play hockey. Who would have thought that some sixty years later he would be coaching my favorite hockey team, the Detroit Red Wings

He played Junior hockey in Canada and later went on to play for both the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks. All in all, Scotty Bowman has influenced both my personal life and my hockey life by his work ethics and his philosophy on life. He was not the smartest when it came to history or to math but the man knew his hockey. Scotty is the winningest coach in NHL history and he is the only coach to win more than 200 play-off games. Scotty really never had any educational experience. From these to teams he learned a great deal form the game and how it worked. He believes you must work hard at whatever you do and always do whatever you can to make yourself a better person. In Detroit he has lead them to two Stanley Cups and hopefully there third this year. Be able to think on his feet, memorize every game he's ever seen, match lineups under intense pressure without blinking, contain his temper, and erupt in rage at the right moment. He is by far the only coach I know that can motivate, as well as strategic, manage a gang of poets, hit men, no-hopers and goalies. This is where I believe his personal philosophy comes into play. After retiring from playing hockey he turned to coaching. He is a firm believer in giving back to the community.
