World War I

World War I was the result of leaders' aggression towards other countries, which was supported by the rising nationalism of the European nations. Economic and imperial competition and fear of war prompted military alliances and an arms race, which further escalated the tension contributing to the outbreak of war. On the European continent there were chiefly five raising great powers. On one side France, Britain, and Russia and on the other were the Central Powers Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey. All were trying to establish themselves as the preeminent power on the continent. Armies and navies were greatly expanded. The standing armies of France and Germany doubled in size between 1870 and 1914. Naval expansion was also extremely competitive, particularly between Germany and Great Britain. By 1889, the British had established the principle that in order to maintain naval superiority in the event of war they would have to have a navy two and a half times as large as the second-largest navy. Another factor which contributed to the increase in rivalry in Europe was imperialism. Great Britain, Germany and France needed foreign markets after the increase in manufa

America was furious at the brutality and demanded a stop to this type of attack. On April 6, 1917, by a vote of 82 to 6 in the Senate and 373 to 50 in the House of Representatives, the United States of America declared war on Germany. Germany was a dictatorship fighting against the great democracies of the world and America as a democratic nation felt an obligation to support them. It appeared that Inflation knew no bounds. Germany was hit the hardest in terms of struggling with war reparations, and inflation drastically lowered the value of the German mark. On June 28, 1914 Gavrilo Princip assassinated the Archduke Franz Ferdinand in the provincial capital of Sarajevo setting the wheels of war in motion. Germany responded by unleashing the U Boats. Members of the middle class who had been living reasonably comfortably on investments began to experience a rocky financial period. American increasingly saw Germany as the enemy. From 1914 to 1916 trade with the Allies grew from 825 million dollars to 3. Although Britain and France resolved their differences in Africa, several crises foreshadowing the war involved the clash of Germany against Britain and France in North Africa. When the war began England enforced a naval blockade of Germany in the hopes of cutting off supplies.
