Discrimination
Discrimination is any condition in which a group or individual is treated differently based on something other than individual cause, usually their connection in a socially diverse group or category. Such categories may include ethnicity, sex, religion, age, or disability. Discrimination can be looked upon as positive or negative, depending on whether a person receives favors or opportunities, or is denied them. Today, though, discrimination is rarely positive.One of the most enveloping forms of discrimination in the United States is aimed at ethnic groups. It's a discriminatory form called Racism. Racism can be the mistreatment of a group of people on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, place of origin or even ancestry. The term racism may also mean a blind and unreasoning hatred, envy or prejudice. Some expressions of racism are slight, such as the unequal opportunity in housing and jobs. Some, not so subtle, are more devious, such as graffiti, intimidation or physical violence. Racial and ethnic slurs or so-called "jokes" are other examples of obvious racial discrimination. For many years city voters were denied the same representation in Congress and state legislatures; the elderly have been faced with discrimination in employment and housing, despite federal and state laws designed to stop such incidents from happening; ex-prisoners and mental patients have suffered legal disabilities after their time in confinement has ended; and some aliens have been denied equal employment opportunities. Another story, Harold Massop, was rejected for a business loan from three different banks despite his excellent track record. The stereotypical "housewife" no longer wanted to be home, but in the workplace with their fathers, their brothers, their uncles, and their husbands. They never got the major dream jobs of being a doctor in a large city hospital where all the patients looked at you and saw the life you would give them, nor did they get that big position as a professor at the local university, where your pupils looked at you and saw God. Since Europeans first came to America, Native Americans have been forcibly deprived of their lands and denied civil rights. Discrimination has also taken on other forms. But we destroyed all that they had worked so hard to achieve. Many actions have been taken to stop the injustice, but through it all, discrimination is still, unfortunately, alive and well. Many times, when women wanted to move up in the business world, the only way to get there, was by enduring the painstaking days of harassment and the constant bombardment of ridicule from other employees, the many unpaid hours worked, and even sexual favors forced upon by the boss; the only man that could either make your dreams come true or just as easily send then crashing to the ground. Now, Native American life consists of an ongoing struggling to survive and to just be. The idea of a "Big Brother" doesn't seem so far fetched, now, does it? American women have historically been victimized by discrimination in voting, employment, and other civil rights. Around the world people of different race and/or ethnicity have been discriminated against. A well-known form of discrimination exists against homosexuals, who, in the past, have endured injustice because of social and sexual taboos. Little do those who mistreat each of these innocent people know, the people they have abused, verbally and physically, are just like them, Americans hurting for their country, plain and simple. All through the history of the United States, many other groups have suffered some form of discrimination.
