History of Hockey in Canada
Hockey, a team game played on ice skates, with curved sticks and a rubber disks called a puck. There is not that much to talk about the history of hockey in Canada, so it took me a long time to do this. It really started originating in Asia and Persia around 2000 BC, but it did not really come out until the middle 19th century in Canada. The earliest mention of the game dates back to 1527, when the Galway Statutes including "hokie", the hurling of little balls with sticks. Hokie means it hurts. Kinds of hockey start with little stick and ball games. They were played by ancient Aztecs, Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, and Arabs. A sport similar to hockey that is known to have been played during the 1st millennium BC in Ireland is called Hurling. Hockey is considered to be the national sport in Canada. Star players are admired as much in Canada as star baseball players are admired in the US. The game is by far the most popular played amateur and professional sport in Canada. Modern ice hockey was developed in the mid-1850's by British soldiers in Canada. The first rules were made by students at McGill University in Montreal in 1879. The first NHL teams were the Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadians, Montreal Wanderers, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. An attempt was made in 1923 to introduce a working arrangement between professional and amateur hockey. The agreement originally was for the elimination of professional sponsorship for individual amateur teams. Gordie Howe was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 32 seasons in the NHL and in the WHA. Before the beginning of the 1917-18 season, goalies were not allowed to fall down to make a save. Lord Stanley was willing to give a different cup to every great hockey player that was willing to give his all to win. Bobby set a record, for a defenseman, in 1970-1971 with 102 assists. He holds the NHL career records for the highest goals-per-game average, which is . Two more medals came in 1964 and 1980. Holds the NHL single season record for most shorthanded goals, which is 13. The HHOF supports the programs of other charitable organizations by providing special exhibits, project co-ordination and fundraising things. The game got so popular that Lord Baron Stanley of Preston, governor general of Canada, donated a silver bowl to the champion hockey team.
