Late in the afternoon of a chilly day in February, in the town of P-----, inKentucky; during the antebellum period. This being in the 1850's was a time periodwhen slavery was accepted in the south. Eleven years after this story was published(January 1, 1863) President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation whichvirtually ended almost 250 years of American slavery (1619-1865). To the Americans,slavery was their right as a person, African Americans were known as objects and wereoften treated like animals. When the Declaration of Independence was written it said"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they areendowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life,Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." Written by Thomas Jefferson, but at the sametime they reflected the attitudes of a nation in which individual rights were trampled by aforeign government. But at the same time, Jefferson owned over two hundred slaves athis Virginian plantation. At that time slaves were only counted as 3/5 of a person.
