20th Century Germany

Evaluate the success of the Nazi party in transforming Germany into a Nazi society in the period 1933 to 1945.

After assuming political power in 1933, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party implemented a mission of reviving German strength, acquiring territory for more living space or Lebensraum, and establishing a foundation for a pure “racial/supremist” state. In order to achieve these goals, Hitler needed to create a sense of Volksgemeinschaft or a national community unified in mind, will, and spirit. Volksgemeinschaft could only be attained through total state control; therefore, every facet of cultural and social life had to be controlled to achieve Nazi ideology. Culture, the press, movies, religion, education and children’s activities were among the many aspects of the social life controlled by the Nazis, as well as control over the economy, education and family structure in the newly formed, totalitarian state.

Immediately upon becoming chancellor, Hitler moved to consolidate his power. He persuaded Hindenburg to issue a decree suspending all civil liberties in Germany. A subservient legislature passed the Enabling Act, which permitted Hitler's government to make laws without legislative approval. The act effectively made t

Unemployment dropped from 6 millions in 1932 to less than 1 million in 1936.

Hitler had strong anti-Semitic sentiment. Sport became increasingly important. But to win this struggle, Germany would have to be ruled by a Dictator and would have to be racially aware.

The first discriminatory laws against Jews came in 1933, when the Nazi Racial Policy came into effect. The Nazi Racial Policy was underpinned by four key components; Nationalism, Anti-Semitism, Social Darwinism and Lebensraum (Living Space). Hjalmar Scacht carried through some important reforms that revitalised and re-organised the German economy, such as strengthening Germany’s trade position, trade treaties with other countries, such as Eastern Europe and Latin America, and a system of Barter, where Germany would receive the raw materials it needed, in exchange for German exports. The nazi party made little attempt to restrict business and capitalist activity, as long as industry leaders accepted the authority of the state. An individual's livelihood was made dependent on his or her political loyalty. The autonomy previously exercised in many matters by the provincial governments was eliminated, and these sub national governments were transformed into strictly controlled instruments of the central Government. The party's Auslandsorganisation (Foreign Organization) conducted National Socialist propaganda and created, financed, and directed National Socialist organizations among Germans and people of German extraction abroad. Music was guided by biological theory represented in the Nordic traits of Mozart, Wagner, and Hayden.

The Hitler youth movement aimed to control and shape the entire youth of the nation to support the aims of the Nazi State.
