JFK
Oliver Stone's JFK recreates a time in history both tragic and inspiring to its audiance. The author/filmmaker tries to say that there is something corrupt in the way our government works, and many people can get away with anything they please, including murdering the president and covering it up. There is something inherently wrong, and indeed frightening, in the very prospect of this idea. Conspiracy theories and scandals run rampant in society, which fueled Jim Garrisson to question what the authorities had told him about the death of John F. Kennedy. Mostly based on truth and with a star studded cast, JFK inspires the viewer to question authority and makes them feel the need to change what's wrong with the world. The story follows the process and the eventual case that Jim Garrison builds against certain government officials in the assassination of JFK. He uncovers the faults in the records of the death, and tells the public and media of his findings. He figures out how impossible is was for Oswald to kill the president and formulates his theory on more than one killer. He then plots how in order for everything to work out the way it did, the person who instigated the tragedy must have an immense amount of
As Nelmes's An Introduction to Film Studies states, "the documentary is constructed and may be seen not as a recording of 'reality', but as another kind of representation of 'reality'". Indeed, the media plays an impartial bystander that is influenced by anything it is told. At first, the media is pro Garrisson's case, yet when molded by the "higher powers" that he is just trying to cause trouble, the media turns against him and tries to ruin his reputation. A coup de tae instigated by a mastermind from either the CIA or the Mafia meant that nothing could be left to chance, everything had to be carefully planned. Human nature has an inherent lust for power and control, and certain times in history, people have abused their power to gain personally. This lie uncovered by Garrisson, if fact, is virtually the biggest lie ever. It responds to the need to educate the public on the mass idea of political democracy. The impact on democracy and our society is so great because, if true, the viewer will want to do something to right the wrongs so they can feel safe within the system again. The concept of molding the media and pulling off such a heinous act against America is quite frightening. By making some of the film actual footage and other parts a re-creation of events, Stone can effectively show that his ideas are based on facts and from that, the gravity of the situation can truly be felt. Garrisson's theories and speculations were never proven, and the person on trial was eventually acquitted, yet his argument was so strong that it caught the attention of many, so much that Oliver Stone felt he should direct this pseudo-documentary. "The documentary of Social Description has its primary purpose to present to an audience social conditions, particularly how an environment and institutions affect the lives of the people" states Nelmes. This film is a social documentary in every right. Having an official brought down by conspirators close to them has been a part of our history since we can trace it back.
