The Rime of The Ancient Marine
Introduction to Literary Studies - QSamuel Taylor Coleridge's poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" conveys to us a message that people have to recompense for their wrong actions. The Mariner's punishment for betraying nature by shooting the Albatross is his intense agony and misery. The Mariner admits his fault and accepts his penalty; hence he survives with the burden of telling a story rather than facing death. The Mariner's destiny, however, is not under the control of a pardoning God because his agony always returns after he finishes telling his tale. No matter how much he prays or weeps: his sin will never leave him. God is prevalent throughout this poem. After the killing of the Albatross, God begins to start the punishment for the Mariner's crimes. Their ship is pushed into a silent sea where the sailors were quickly stranded; the winds died down, and the ship was "As idle as a painted ship / Upon a painted ocean." The ocean solidified, and the men had no water to drink; as if the sea were decomposing, slimy creatures crawled out of it and walked across the surface. He is punished harshly for kill
Too dry-mouthed to inform the other sailors, the Mariner bit down on his arm; sucking the blood, he was able to wet his tongue enough to cry out, "A sail! a sail!" The sailors smiled, thinking they were saved. Some people deny their faults and are condemned. " He has the power to tell his tale and this sets him free for a short while. His anguish is like an incurable disease, and the only medicine he has for alleviation is telling his tale to another being hence the Mariner explains to The Wedding Guest why he must persist to tell his tale. Jesus gives people the power to repent and do penance to receive his forgiveness. As he says, "forthwith this frame of mine was wrenched. They play an active part in the lives of individuals, and can be the deciding factor of many of their destinies. But as the ship neared, and they saw that it was a ghostly, skeletal hull of a ship and that its crew included two figures: Death and the Night-mare Life-in-Death, who takes the form of a pale woman with golden locks and red lips, and "thicks man's blood with cold. However this God is not remissive and hence can't be Jesus. " He tells the Wedding Guest that, until he retells his story, "The heart within me burns. God however, hasn't forgiven him, for he still wonders about in search of a person to tell his tale so eventually God can free his soul. " When the Mariner declares his wrongdoing to the Hermit, God reminds him of his offence by piercing his heart leaving him with unbearable pain. " God is accountable for making sure that the Mariner has and will feel agony in spurts for the rest of his life. " God has no sympathy for the Mariner and instead of listening to him he shows The Mariner the sign of death.
